Job Description:
This position is located on the Six Rivers National Forest, Supervisor’s Office in Eureka, CA.
The Public Affairs Specialist provides leadership for planning and executing a comprehensive public affairs program to communicate the Forest’s programs/policies to the public and serve as a liaison between organizations which includes tribal governments.
Job Responsibilities:

- Provide leadership for planning, designing, and executing a comprehensive public affairs program for communicating the organization’s programs, policies, and activities to the surrounding publics.
- Serve as the official spokesperson and primary contact for local and national media that require immediate responsiveness.
- Coordinate effective employee and public meetings, workshops, field trips, or other forums designed to foster employee and public participation.
- Develop crisis and/or emergency communication plans during emergency events such as road closures, evacuations, fatalities, etc.
- Respond to media queries, including issues of a sensitive nature or may be subject to public misunderstanding or draw adverse public attention.
- Serve as the principal advisor and spokesperson for the Unit leader and senior staff on all matters involving public issues and the creation of communication policy.
- Initiate program of action to earn community respect and confidence, taking into consideration the differing needs and goals of various publics.
- Maintain effective working relationships with representatives of government, congressional members, civic organizations, media representatives and special interest groups.
- Provide leadership to preserve existing partnerships and develop new relationships with governmental/non-governmental/and non-profit organizations, tribal governments, media, and the academia.
- Direct public affairs support for all natural resource program areas, to include community relations, serving as the liaison between local organizations, government officials, special interests groups, the public, tribal governments, etc.
