Job Description:

We have a fully operational lab with all of the equipment necessary to complete our projects. Facilities are adequate to do the work performed. Our research routinely involves work with hazardous materials, including radioactive chemicals, organic solvents, acids and compressed gases. The laboratory is licensed to use radioactive material and all employees must successfully complete the Chemical Safety and Radiation Protection courses offered by UBC. All cell culture work will be performed in a biological safety cabinet and an animal care certificate is mandatory. Desk space is available in an area outside the laboratory.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Plans and performs immunofluorescence microscopy and/or immunohistochemistry.
  • Performing other general lab-related duties as required.
  • Performs complex procedures on animals including injections, blood collection, tissue collection, and animal monitoring. Comfortably handles rodents and helps to coordinate and perform long-term experiments involving rats.
  • Prepares reagents and buffers, manages cell cultures, and performs in vitro experiments. Isolates and maintains primary cardiomyocytes in culture.
  • Extracts DNA and RNA from biological samples and uses molecular biology techniques including RT-PCR to assess RNA expression and genotyping.
  • Assists with training of new students with regard to cell culture work, molecular biology and/or biochemistry techniques, and use of instruments.
  • In collaboration with senior lab members, assists in the optimization of protocols and troubleshooting of the lab.
  • Analyses, assess and interprets protein expression and activity using Western blotting, ELISA, and enzymatic assays.
  • Analyzes, prepares and interprets experimental data using Prism GraphPad and SigmaPlot. Presents data results at laboratory meetings.
  • Collects, organizes, and tracks blood and tissue samples from experimental animals.
  • Assists with managing transgenic mouse and rat colonies (including ear notching and genotyping).

Job Requirements:

  • Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • MSc degree in the field of pharmacology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related discipline desired.
  • Preference will be given to those with experience in the area of cardiovascular and diabetes research.
  • Must have animal handling experience and be comfortable collecting animal tissue and samples.
  • Previous documented experience with cell culture, molecular biology (PCR) and biochemical methods (Westerns) is required.
  • Organized and detail-oriented individual who is able to perform experiments accurately and efficiently.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work in a collaborative team setting or independently as needed.
