We’re hiring multiple Data Scientists on our team, and you can be a key part of this dynamic, diverse team that has been given the exciting opportunity to explore and solve business problems using literally billions of data points. With an integrated corporate model, the array of opportunities is vast – from mining to supply chain, refineries to Petro-Canada sales and marketing, or energy trading to health and safety, and the variety of challenges we’re asked to solve is extraordinary.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Build models that solve real business problems by using any technique that makes sense (machine learning, classical statistics, simulation, optimization, etc.)
  • Explore the feasibility of early use cases, recommending whether a valid approach exists
  • Track your models’ results in production and advocating for tweaks when necessary
  • Wrangle raw data in a variety of ways (handling missing data, engineering new features, transforming features, selecting features, etc.)
  • Tell the story of your results using visualization when necessary (PowerBI, ggplot, matplotlib, Excel, etc.)
  • Become a vocal advocate for data transformation within Suncor and representing us in the local analytics community
  • Collaborate with developers and cloud architects to make your models operational in a cloud pipeline (dynamically retraining and making predictions)

Job Requirements:

  • A passion for data science, such as participation in data communities, hackathons, ongoing skill development, curiosity in solving problems
  • Enthusiasm for visualizing and communicating your results to stakeholders
  • Broad technical skillset that removes limitations in how you solve problems (querying, wrangling, and positioning data for your models)
  • Proficiency in at least one of Python or R and their related data science libraries (pandas, sklearn, tidyverse, etc.)
