Job Description:

Reporting to the Underground Plant Safety and Projects Manager, the post holder will deliver the research, conduct the analysis and provide the insight which underpins/amends the safety policies on which the safe management of that network is built. The post holder will also be a key player in the implementation of identified changes helping gain business support to do that.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for supporting identification of current and emerging risks posed by the Openreach underground network and shape core elements of policies to safely manage those risks.
  • Responsible for advising on underground asset management and practices ensuring that all 4m joint boxes and 250k manholes are installed/maintained in a way to minimise risk to the public.
  • Supporting the team in the auditing of suppliers of underground assets, joint boxes and frames and covers to ensure the quality of the process and product
  • Responsible for monitoring full root cause analysis and completion of learning during any incident investigations (e.g. Frame/Cover collapse) to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
  • Recent examples- Suitability assessments of using different materials for rectifying defective frame and over installations rather than brick construction. Work with an external company to develop their products to ensure they are viable for Openreach consumption and provide a safe underground network that will stand the test of time
  • Responsible for providing technical knowledge and support to manager on the research which underpins/ amends the plant safety policies on which the safe management of that network is built.
  • Accountable for investigating potential current and future opportunities for the better management of risk and cost reduction.
  • Responsible for supporting the manager & the wider team to implement and project manage identified changes, including leading changes of low-medium complexity, securing business support to do that.

Job Requirements:

  • Willingness to mix both the data & office analysis with the external element being a key part of this role. Compiling results and data; up to and including destructive removal of sub standard installations.
  • Able to own projects from cradle to grave and engage key stakeholders across the Openreach business units
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with multiple stakeholders. Engage with key stakeholders at all levels internally and externally to understand their issues and perspective.
  • Be willing to travel across the UK and when required overseas, both with overnight stays.
  • Minimum of NEBOSH certificate in Health & Safety or equivalent (or willing to study).
  • Proactive horizon scanning, using both data analysis and practical hands on in the field practice to spot issues and opportunities rather than waiting for them to manifest.
  • Ability to manage incidents of low-medium impact within the Plant Safety team, and ensure full root cause analysis and learning is achieved to reduce the risk of similar accidents.
