Job Description:

We have an opportunity for a dynamic and enthusiastic band four generic occupational therapy / physiotherapy assistant to join the musculoskeletal therapy team at the Nottingham treatment centre at Nottingham University hospitals NHS trust. The post is a full-time, permanent post.
The Nottingham treatment centre is now part of the service provided by NUH. We have a team of physiotherapists and occupational therapists working in rheumatology and elective orthopaedic surgery including hands, upper limb and lower limb surgery.
The successful applicant will work with both the physiotherapy and occupational therapy teams in assisting with the management of both inpatients and outpatients.

Job Responsibilities:

  • To evaluate and process referrals in order to ensure the patient receives the appropriate therapy intervention.
  • To ensure that consent is gained prior to any intervention with the patient and respect a patients right to decline treatment
  • To undertake therapy assessments of a designated caseload. To use clinical decision making tools to interpret this assessment information and plan treatment/discharge planning accordingly
  • To assess, provide, fit and demonstrate use of a wide range of equipment including wheelchairs to promote independence.
  • To lead on access and home visits for designated cases.
  • To lead group sessions such as breakfast clubs or exercise classes with support of qualified staff
  • To work independently to promote wellbeing, safety and independence within essential activities of daily living, by providing instruction, advice and treatment to the patient and/or their carers.
  • Take appropriate precautions to maintain confidentiality and patient dignity at all times, treating each patient as an individual and being sensitive to cultural and religious needs.
  • To refer onto appropriate hospital and community services eg. ICELS, community OT or physiotherapy.
  • Use initiative in the management of patients ensuring consultation with registered therapist in areas outside of their remit.
  • To maintain comprehensive and accurate records in line with Trust policy and relevant professional bodies Code of Professional Conduct.
  • To maintain appropriate statistical returns as required
  • The post holder’s hours will be scheduled over 7 days which will involve weekend working

Job Requirements:

  •  GCSE (A-C) English/Maths or equivalent
  • To have the ability to empathise with and motivate others
  • To be flexible and willing to adapt
  • To understand the concepts of rehabilitation
  • To have an ability to communicate with patients who have impaired communication abilities
  • To have an ability to deal with pressurised/unexpected situations
  • To have experience of working in a relevant healthcare setting
  • NVQ/QCF level 3 in healthcare or equivalent relevant qualification
  • To demonstrate self-management skills (e.g. time management, prioritising
