Job Description:

Job Responsibilities:

  • Present a variety of captivating, and memorable interpretation programs at Elk Island National Park, including drop-in programs, evening programs, school group activities, and guided tours. Program topics include bison conservation, park history, and Canadian wildlife.
  • Share the magic with visitors to Elk Island National Park!
  • This opportunity involves plenty of hands-on work, mostly outdoors.
  • Provide general labour services by mowing grass and vegetation and clearing trails.
  • Assist with maintenance of roads and visitor facilities by cleaning, collecting garbage and recyclable materials, and painting.
  • Help visitors meaningfully connect with Elk Island National Park by assisting with monitoring and implementation of visitor experience products.
  • This may include conducting surveys through one-on-one communication with members of the public in Elk Island National Park and collecting data to support various visitor-related projects.
  • Assist our ecologists and technicians with wildlife and vegetation monitoring, preventing and mitigating human-wildlife conflicts, active management projects including invasive plant management, ecological research, and environmental assessments in the park.
  • These positions will require both data management and extensive field work.
  • Provide visitor services at various visitor service locations in Elk Island National Park.
  • Includes providing comprehensive information to the visiting public on a wide variety of topics including: campgrounds, trails, points of interest, safety, wilderness travel and park regulations and policies.

Job Requirements:

  • Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and required protective clothing;

  • Knowledge of Elk Island National Park (programs, facilities, services, trail system, activities, conservation initiatives).
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial holidays, when required;
  • Currently recognized as having full-time student status by the academic institution in which you are presently enrolled;
  • Be able to work in inclement weather when required;
  • Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain and weather;
  • Exercises sound judgement;
  • Be capable of using moderate to medium physical effort to carry out work tasks; specifically, for Asset Management, medium physical effort to lift 50 lbs maximum with frequent lifting/carrying up to 25 lbs;
  • Returning to full-time studies in the next academic term – students will be required to provide proof of enrollment.
  • A full-time student currently enrolled in an accredited institution;
  • Has own transportation to get to and from the workplace.
  • Attention to detail: Ability to work in a conscientious, consistent and thorough manner;

Qualification & Experience:

  • Experience using various computer programs and/or data management.
  • Experience working with the public;
  • Experience communicating with the public.
  • Experience in heritage interpretation, theatre/performing arts, or story-telling.
  • Experience in the use of manual tools or experience in a garage setting;
  • Experience in performing general labour tasks (e.g. cleaning, clearing debris, landscaping);
  • Experience working in a team environment;
  • Experience in working with diverse target audiences;
