Job Description:
The position(s) is located in the Office of Railroad Safety, Office of Railroad Infrastructure and Mechanical, Track Division in the field. The Track Division is responsible for executing and administering the track and structures safety programs to ensure maximum safety in railroad operations relevant to railroad track, track configuration, track components, rail integrity, bridge and structures, and railroad workplace safety.
Job Responsibilities:
- Produces detailed reports of accidents, complaints, violations, and investigations, including gathering all information necessary for the proper and expeditious processing of such investigations.
- Responsible to assess railroad compliance with the carrier’s track inspection process to support compliance with federal regulations related to 49 CFR Part 213 and Part 214.
- Performs Roadway Worker Protection (RWP) checks and audits on railroad workers that are engaged in on-track activities. This includes Roadway Maintenance Machines (RMM) and hi-rail equipment with or without cranes.
- Prepares daily inspections reports of identified defects, violation reports when necessary, and collects sufficient back-up evidence to support agency attorneys in matters of prosecution.
- Responsible for the improvement and advancement of railroad safety in areas related to track construction, track maintenance, repair activities, and employee safety.

Qualification & Experience:
- Experience in the railroad industry that has provided you with the knowledge of general railroad safety health principles and practices; as well as railroad investigation and inspection techniques.
- Experience applying FRA Track Safety Standards and railroad workplace safety standards/regulations for the purpose of inspecting and identifying track and roadway worker safety deficiencies.
- Experience with conducting track inspections and applying 49 CFR Part 213 and Part 214 regulations for the purpose of safety compliance conditions of the railroad track, facilities, safe working procedures and provisions of the employees, and the surrounding track right-of-way areas and have knowledge of proper remedial action to those conditions.
- Experience with analyzing information that can be used during the course of conducting railroad inspections, or used to determine probable cause of railroad related collisions, derailments, or other accidents/incidents.
- Experience with writing and presenting information pertaining to railroad track safety inspections and/or investigations.
