Website FDA

Job Description:

The Division of Biomedical Physics in the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories (OSEL) has an opening in Silver Spring, MD for a full-time staff scientist / engineer with a focus in biomedical optics. The candidate should have a strong background in one or more of the following: light-tissue interaction; optics; spectroscopy; and/or modeling of light propagation in tissue. Preference will be given to candidates that have expertise in population-specific biological factors that play a significant role in light-tissue interactions and can impact device performance and/or safety. This may include experience in studying the effects of epidermal pigmentation, anatomical characteristics (e.g., tissue layer thickness), physiological parameters (e.g., hematocrit), biological chromophores, tissue turbidity, etc.

The position focuses on laboratory and computational research, as well as policy or consulting support for reviews of new medical devices involving analysis of safety and effectiveness. The successful candidate will generate written technical and scientific documents for peer-reviewed publications and regulatory activities.

Job Requirements:

  • Ph.D. from an accredited university in engineering, physics, or a relevant health science field.
  • At least three years of experience planning and conducting laboratory and/or computational research in the field of biomedical optics, preferably with a focus on light-tissue interaction and personalized factors that can affect device safety and effectiveness.
  • Experience reviewing, analyzing, and using scientific data or other information to advance optically based medical devices, Experience with pulse oximetry, Near-infrared spectroscopy, Hyper-/multi-spectral and spatial frequency domain imaging, optical coherence tomography (OCT) oximetry imaging, or other optically based medical devices is preferred.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate experience with the development of performance test methods based on tissue-simulating phantoms, computational modeling of light-tissue interactions, spectroscopic data processing algorithms, clinical and/or animal based evaluation of devices, and assessment of confounding physiological, environmental, and/or use factors.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in and contribute to multi-disciplinary teams and work groups to resolve difficult or controversial research questions.
