Job Description:

The stories attached to the historic places in our care span six millennia and include palaces, houses, hill figures, castles, abbeys, industrial sites, Roman forts and even deserted medieval villages. Creating inspirational visitor experiences that bring the story of England to life, and caring for our sites and collections for the benefit of this and future generations is a cornerstone of everything we do. The generosity of our Members, donors and other supporters enables us to do this.

Job Requirements:

• Strategic Finance: given the criticality of financial sustainability to our Strategic Plan, now more so than ever, appointing a Trustee with significant experience of running financial operations at an executive level and in an organisation of similar size and complexity to English Heritage, would be highly beneficial
• Digital: as a charity growing its membership, driving more visitors to sites and events, and raising money from philanthropic sources, we have integrated digital thinking into all areas of our business. However, we know there is much more to be done. A Trustee with a professional digital background, could help us take advantage of emerging technologies to support delivery of our strategic goals
• Education: we are really pleased that English Heritage and our sites feature in the national history curriculum, and we are crucially aware how important it is to engage young audiences in our work. Having someone on our board with executive level experience of using historic sites, and the stories they tell, to inspire young people, would be of great benefit
• Political influencing and lobbying: the uncertainty and financial impact of the recent pandemic on all organisations has made us appreciate the importance of having someone on the Board who could directly represent the charity’s interests at all levels of government
