Job Responsibilities:

• Serve as a subject matter expert for beta-cell development, differentiation and function.
• Establish and lead a lab focused on iPSC derived beta-cell platforms
• Contribute to and lead Lilly’s efforts in beta-cell regeneration and islet cell therapy
• Develop new approaches and models for immunotherapy for type 1 diabetes
• Participate in and lead cross-functional portfolio therapeutic development projects
• Lead and assist in the identification, evaluation, and selection of new therapeutic targets across modalities
• Design and oversee the implementation of in vitro and in vivo assays for the development of clinical candidate molecules
• Collaborate with chemists, siRNA and protein engineers to create structure-activity relationships and optimize the therapeutic for clinical evaluation
• Define the relationships between therapeutic efficacy, patient subpopulations, clinical trial design and outcomes that significantly impact clinical development
• Monitor research literature and regularly communicate current trends and innovative methods and applications to scientific partners; drive internalization of innovative research approaches
• Engage Diabetes and Complications R&D senior management and stakeholders for strategic alignment
• Curate scientific alliances with thought leaders in academia/biotechnology to incorporate best practices and key capabilities

Job Requirements:

• Ph.D. and postdoctoral fellowship(s) in beta-cell biology with emphasis on beta-cell development and function.
• In-depth knowledge of stem cell biology with emphasis on pancreatic islets
• Demonstrated experience to work in cross-functional scientific teams
• Ability to set vision and identify paths for implementation, including ability to work both collaboratively and drive new directions. Willingness to prioritize and make trade-offs
• Strong oral and written communication skills; needs to be able to communicate effectively with senior leadership, internal and external partners and staff
• Ability to lead a diverse set of team-members, and deliver effective coaching and feedback
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Excellent self-management and organizational abilities

Qualification & Experience:

• Experience in pharmaceutical or biotech industry with emphasis on drug discovery
• Experience managing data-driven research from project inception to clinical trial design
• Knowledge of bioinformatics methods and tools
